Australian Animal Pathology Standards Program Roadshow 2023: Bone Pathology

17 Jul

The annual Australian Animal Pathology Standards Program (AAPSP) Roadshow was held over 15th-30th of June 2023, inviting veterinary pathologists to share insights and learn from experts within the field.

The AAPSP was founded on the critical role that veterinary pathologists play in national biosecurity, market access and public health through the provision of reliable diagnoses. As a joint initiative of the Australian Society for Veterinary Pathology, the Sub-Committee on Animal Health Laboratory Standards, and Animal Health Australia, the AAPSP aims to address the need for a program to monitor, maintain and improve the quality of pathological interpretation and diagnosis by veterinary pathologists in Australia and elsewhere.

A key feature of the AAPSP is the Roadshow, an annual 2-day, in person and virtual workshop delivered across Australia which is aimed directly at improving diagnostic quality and exotic disease awareness in all veterinary laboratories (government, private and university). The Roadshow offers an opportunity for attendees to share challenges faced in the field of veterinary pathology, gain insights from national and international experts, and obtain Continued Professional Development points.

This year the roadshow explored the role of veterinary pathologists in bone pathology. There were just under 100 attendees across the five locations: Cooper Plains (QLD), South Perth (WA), Bundoora (Vic), Camperdown (NSW), and North Terrace (SA), which also offered remote attendance. The workshops were presented by Dr Keren Dittmer (phD, BVSc, DACVP), from Massey University, New Zealand, who provided a thorough overview of metabolic bone disease in all species including tips for investigating fracture outbreaks, tumours of bone with emphasis on radiology, cytology and histology, and tips for investigating teratogenic and genetic skeletal diseases with a brief introduction to mutation detection. The Roadshow was generously sponsored by the Davis-Thompson Foundation.

Feedback from the roadshow was very positive with participants praising the experience and knowledge provided by Dr Keren Dittmer.

“Best conference I have been to for a while” “Fantastic course, excellent and very knowledgeable presenter, very useful and practical course.”
