New Chair at the helm: Malcolm Letts leads Animal Health Australia into a new era

28 Nov

Animal Health Australia (AHA) would like to announce that after five years in the role, Sharon Starick has stepped down as AHA Chair, with Malcolm Letts appointed unopposed.

Ms Starick said, “It has been a privilege to serve as Chair, during a time that saw many opportunities to deliver for our members in strengthening the Australian biosecurity system.”

“With Dr Samantha Allan at the helm, a talented AHA workforce, a highly skilled and experienced Board and the final year of delivery of our current strategy, now was the right time to pass the baton to a new Chair,” said Ms Starick.

Whilst stepping down as Chair, Ms Starick will remain on the Board continuing to share her invaluable expertise and experience.

Malcolm Letts joined the AHA Board in 2020 and brings with him many years’ experience in senior executive government roles, with extensive knowledge across biosecurity prevention, preparedness and response measures, policy development and governance.

“I’m incredibly honoured to be appointed as Chair of the AHA Board. In my view, the national biosecurity system has never been more important to Australia.

“Member confidence in AHA and the critical role it plays is strong and I’m looking forward to working with the AHA Board, leadership team and our members to ensure the long-term success of Australia’s animal health and biosecurity system,” said Mr Letts.

Mr Letts worked with the Queensland Government for 31 years, with the last 20 years in senior executive roles, including as Deputy Director-General, Agriculture. He was also responsible for the trade and investment area in the department. He was awarded a Public Service Medal (2023) for his work across policy, integrity, compliance and animal welfare matters.

Mr Letts, the AHA Board and AHA CEO, Dr Samantha Allan, thanked Ms Starick for her exemplary leadership of AHA over the past five years, acknowledging her calm and inclusive approach which has strengthened relations with our members and key stakeholders.
