National roadshow advances skills in veterinary ocular pathology

22 Oct 2026

Close to 110 veterinary pathologists from across Australia have gathered for the 2026 Australian Animal Pathology Standards Program (AAPSP) Roadshow, learning from one of the world’s leading experts in veterinary ocular pathology.

Delivered across five states, the roadshow strengthened diagnostic capability and provided opportunities for veterinary pathologists to share knowledge, discuss cases and build expertise in diseases and conditions affecting the eye.

Learning from a global leader

Dr Leandro Teixeira, Associate Professor of Anatomic Pathology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Veterinary Medicine and Director of the Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (COPLOW) presented the workshops.

Drawing on extensive experience, Dr Teixeira guided participants through a broad range of ocular diseases, diagnostic approaches and pathological findings.

Participants attended workshops in Queensland, Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, exploring topics ranging from congenital abnormalities and ocular trauma to glaucoma, retinal disorders and ocular tumours.

Building skills with practical relevance

For attendees, one of the greatest benefits was learning directly from a recognised specialist while exploring cases and diagnostic challenges relevant to everyday veterinary pathology practice.

Feedback highlighted the value of the comprehensive content, high-quality diagnostic images, and Dr Teixeira’s engaging and interactive teaching style. Participants particularly appreciated applying the material to their day-to-day work.

“Getting a comprehensive overview and refresher on one system from a recognised expert is an invaluable learning opportunity.”

Supporting Australia’s animal health system

Strong diagnostic capability plays a critical role in detecting, investigating and responding to animal diseases.

The Australian Animal Pathology Standards Program (AAPSP) is a national initiative that helps strengthen veterinary pathology expertise across Australia through proficiency testing, professional development, technical workshops and access to specialist reference resources. Managed by Animal Health Australia on behalf of its partners, the program supports the diagnostic capability that underpins Australia’s animal health system.

By connecting Australian veterinary pathologists with world-class expertise and fostering knowledge sharing across jurisdictions, the AAPSP Roadshow helps strengthen the skills and networks that contribute to Australia’s animal health preparedness.

AAPSP would like to acknowledge the Davis-Thompson Foundation, whose support helped make the 2026 Roadshow possible.

More about the AAPSP

The Australian Animal Pathology Standards Program (AAPSP) is a joint initiative of the Australian Society for Veterinary Pathology, the Sub Committee on Animal Health Laboratory Standards and Animal Health Australia. It aims to improve the diagnostic capability of the national animal health system.
