Animal Health in Australia reports for 2025 are now available

19 May 2026

Animal Health Australia has published the Animal Health in Australia (AHiA) Annual Report 2025 and the Animal Health in Australia System Report (Second Edition).

Together, these reports provide an overview of Australia’s animal health outcomes and the national system that supports disease surveillance, preparedness and response.

The reports are used across government and industry to inform policy, support preparedness and response planning, and provide transparency on Australia’s animal health system for national and international audiences. They also support trade and market access for Australian agriculture and form part of Australia’s annual reporting to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

2025 in focus: outcomes delivered

The AHiA Annual Report 2025 highlights a year of significant activity and achievement across Australia’s animal health sector.

A major outcome in 2025 was the successful response to and eradication of H7 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Victoria, culminating in Australia’s self‑declaration of national freedom to WOAH. This response demonstrated strong coordination among governments, industry, and the veterinary sector, supported by surveillance, diagnostics, and national decision‑making frameworks.

The Annual Report also highlights continued efforts to strengthen national preparedness. This included a suite of coordinated exercises testing emergency arrangements, decision‑making and multi‑jurisdictional coordination for animal disease events. Exercises such as Exercise Raintree, which focused on lumpy skin disease, tested national response arrangements and informed ongoing work under the National Lumpy Skin Disease Action Plan.

Alongside preparedness and response activities, the report documents progress under national animal health strategies, including Animalplan and AQUAPLAN. These plans guide coordinated action on surveillance, research, workforce capability and emergency readiness across terrestrial and aquatic sectors.

How the system works

The AHiA System Report (Second Edition) complements the Annual Report by explaining how Australia’s animal health system is structured and delivered.

It provides an overview of the organisations involved and the arrangements that underpin:

  • biosecurity and disease prevention
  • national surveillance and laboratory capability
  • emergency animal disease preparedness and response
  • traceability, animal welfare and One Health activities.

The System Report has been updated to improve clarity and readability and remains a key reference for understanding how shared responsibilities across governments, industry and the veterinary profession support Australia’s animal health outcomes.
